Happy Wednesday! This braided cowl sewing tutorial was shared much earlier in the year with readers of a Bird and a Bean… and now I’m sharing it with you. This is a very basic tutorial, and would be a great project to start with if you looking for a beginner project. Gather some fabric and let’s get started.
I love how light and fresh it is! I think this cowl will be great as I transition my wardrobe to winter. {yes, it’s just getting cold here!}Alright, let’s get sewing! You will need 1 yrd of 54″ wide fabric. If your fabric isn’t so wide your cowl will just be tighter…
Cut 3 {12″ x width of fabric} strips. This should use up all the fabric.
Fold in half and sew with right sides together. I serged the edge you could also zig zag. {If you don’t have a machine you can just skip this step. Turn long tubes right side out.
Now, secure one end of each long piece and braid loosely.
When you get to the end, create a circle and check to make sure that the braiding is exactly as you want it. Make it tighter or looser depending on what you want.
Now, match up the ends on both side.
Pin the ends together. I stuck one side in-side the other and pinned. Sew across each strip. You could also just add a few hand stitches here to keep it all together. And there you have it! Your very own Braided Cowl… using a very easy sewing tutorial.
Here’s another free cowl pattern… A color blocked knit cowl pattern.

That’s really cute Em! I’d like to try your tut with REALLY HUGE strands for a big fat chunky version. Fabulous project, and you look so pretty!
Emily says
yes! I would work great with chunkier fabric… that was my original idea in my head.. so this was thinner than i envisioned, but i liked the end result anyway ;o0

This looks easy enough for a novice like me! Thanks for the tutorial. I really really love scarves and cowls right now, but rarely dress up enough to wear them. Too bad sweats and cowls don’t go too well together… haha!
Emily says
ha! yeah… sweats are just perfect themselves.. no need to dress them up! ;o)
