I bought the bucket shorts pattern from Rabbit Rabbit Creations a few months ago and finally got around to sewing up my boys some new shorts before our spring break trip. I made the bucket shorts pattern as directed and ended up with a cute pair of shorts for each boy… then as I was packing the night before I realized that Jack really didn’t have very many shorts for his next size of summer clothes… I decided to play around with the pattern.. left off the “buckets/pockets” and ended up with a great pair of basketball type shorts. They are Jacks new favorite and I will be making more like this!
First up, the boys do love the shorts that are straight from the pattern. The side pockets are just awesome for boys who like to carry stuff around… and my boys definitely fall into that category! I made sure these shorts are a bit on the big side now, because it will stay warm here until November.. we have a long summer season and I want the shorts to last!
And despite how it may appear in this photo, BOTH boys have been enjoying them. Jack was upset about the shirt I asked him to wear for these photos.. and just couldn’t move past… {oh boys!}
These shorts are the perfect mix of being totally comfortable, but depending on the fabric, can also be more than just play clothes… The elastic waistband makes them super easy to get on and off and comfortable to wear.
For the second version – my basketball style shorts.. I simply left off the side pockets.. and the main front and back pieces are two layers. One layer mesh {like I’ve used in this free mesh shorts pattern, and this free mesh pants pattern} and one layer stretchy lining fabric. Both of these were left over from my mesh pants.. You can use any type of athletic type fabric you want, but I would recommend using double layer with mesh. I simple put the two layers together as I pieces the shorts together. The side panel is a single layer of the yellow lining, and looks great.
I made him tuck in the shirt so you could see the fit.. this fit is long, but they are very much like another pair of store bought basketball shorts my son has.. and he loves them… so that means they are perfect!
Here are a few other shorts patterns I’ve loved..

I always thought girls were the fussy ones about clothes!! My 10 year old daughter must approve a pattern, choose the fabric and notions, stage the photo shoot, and decide the pictures we use if I blog about it. thanks for showing a really cute pattern, I’m loving that im not the only one who experiences creative differences with kids in fashion!!
