People don’t trick or treat here in Hong Kong, but we were invited to a costume party last week. It was a first for my boys, so I was excited to make them something cute!
I came up with this simple bee costume, it was easy to sew (around 2 hours for both start to finish) and fun as well.
Isn’t he the cutest bee ever?!
I had to get a picture of us all together, of course the boys weren’t really into looking at the camera. My oldest is into saying,”cheese” but then not looking… lovely!
Too much party for the one year old!
Heres what I did:
First I traced t-shirts that fit the boys well. I didn’t think through the fact that felt doesn’t stretch…thats why the vests don’t button all the way down. In the end though I loved the one button look.
After I cut out the back and two fronts I cut strips and laid them out to get a look.
One vest is black on yellow and the other is yellow on black. I cut little stingers out of black felt as well.
I sewed on the stripes using a simple zigzag stitch. I did pin A LOT before sewing to keep them straight.
With a hot glue gun I attached black circles to pipe cleaners, then those to black headbands. You can get a good look at the shape of the stingers below. I also just hot glued the stingers to the back of the vest, spreading the base open so it would stick straight out.

My kids just love playing dress up. This little bee costume is the perfect project for my daughter and I to sew on her new pink hello kitty kids sewing machine! She will be so excited about sewing some new costumes for her and her brother. Thanks for the sewing tutorial and all of these cute ideas for things to sew for kids!
