Easy Quilt {tutorial}

Today is part 2 of my Easy Quilt Post. I’ll be sharing the details today of changing the crib quilt to a twin size with very easy quilting techniques. Like I said yesterday, I sew a lot, but don’t really quilt, so if I can do this, so can you. I own this tutorial to my mom, who helped me A TON this summer. So… lets do it…

Upcycled Quilt
Lets take a look at this beauty one more time… {ahhh!}
The first thing I did was take this crib quilt…
 and pick out all the quilting… I cut around the outside to remove the binding, but then I wanted to save all the other fabric. This step took a long time… Like a four hour car drive {I wasn’t driving, ha!}
 After I had it all a part I took the quilt top to Joannes and bought coordinating fabric. The yardage is listed at the bottom of this post. We layed out the crib quilt and played around with colors, widths and what looked good together. {the dark red on the outside was from my moms stash and didn’t make the cut}
here the starting dimension and then what we wanted to add. The final size is not quite a full twin, but close. These measurements are the finished product and DO NOT include seam allowance. Add 1/2 incg for seams.
 We ended up adding three additional layers around each side… You can see here. {the dark blue towards the middle is the original + three more rounds}
  an upclose…the first two rounds and various colors, the third is a solid round of a white.
 After these three rounds we wanted to make a Piano Key border. I wanted it to be 8 inches wide finished, so I cut the pieces 8 1/2 by 2 1/2, which finishes at 8×2. Cut the remainder of your fabric into the 2 1/2 inch strips.
 You need to sew these together, I choose to cut them shorted before sewing. I cut the strips into 17 inch lengths. So them together in the same order each time.
From there, cut into the 8 1/2 inch lengths that you need for the outside. From here you will sew them all together to form the border.
 
Now lay these around the outside of your quilt to see how long each piece should be. Sew.
 I cut 8 1/2 inch squares of the backing fabric for the corners of the Piano Key border.
 Here are the detailed instructions…The Center is the original quilt you start with. Sew on the rounds like this… Red line is new seam. See the diagram at the top for the width of each strip. **remember to add 1/2 inch seam allowance!!!***

 here are the fabric requirements and placement.
 After the top was finished I layered with the cotton batting and stitched to the backing. I sewed around the shapes in the middle and then around each layer… be creative with this part!     All I can say is wow! I don’t know that I’d have the patience to pick out all of the quilting from a quilt. I love that your turning this quilt into a twin size bed that your child will get to use for many more years. It looks great!

    I am currently attempting this myself also. Thanks so much for the idea!! After I saw this I went and pulled my son’s crib quilt out of storage in his closet. I just finished taking out the innerds of the quilt or as my husband called it “unsewing”. I’ll come back and let you know how it goes.
