In addition to creating lots of different PJ tutorials, baby blankets are another item I really, really like to sew baby blankets. I enjoy coming up with easy tutorials to help you sew cute baby blankets too. This one requires that you have fabric with some sort of geometric pattern. Squares, triangles, and other straight lines would work best for this geometric fabric baby blanket tutorial.
This fabric requires 1 1/4 yard of a soft cotton top {geometric pattern} and the same of a minkie fabric. I used 40″ square for my size. Of course you can choose any size you like. Place the fabric wrong sides together.
Trim both pieces of fabric to the correct size. Turn so the geometric pattern side is up.
Now, pin pin PIN! You want to avoid any slipping during sewing. You can also use a sewing spray glue to hold the two layers together.
I had some help with this step… she loves to randomly stick pins in fabric.
Now, sew on the shapes of the fabric. I sewed on every other line one direction, then turned the blanket and did the same going the other way. I use a walking foot on my machine to help the feed. I would highly recommend.
Trim the sides if any have slipped. I made my own binding by cutting 2″ strips and sewing them together to be long enough for all blanket edges. You also used pre-made blanket binding. Fold the 2″ strip in half and iron. Then fold 1 side over again like the photo below and press. The other side will not be folded.
You will fold this side over to be the blanket edge.
Line up the unfolded edge of binding with the edge on the front of the blanket. Sew at 1/2″ seam allowance. Sew all the way around blanket, joining ends of binding when you finish. You can see my binding tutorial listed at the bottom of this post for more details if you need.
Fold the binding over to the back of the blanket.
Then fold again. Hand stitch the binding to the back of the blanket.
Cute right? You can see how on the back sides my stitching creates squares on the back of the blanket too.
I made this as a gift and I love the way it turned out. A sweet boy blanket for a sweet little baby boy.
