Okay, so let’s get started with the tutorial for this fun Girls Sundress Tutorial. You’ll need to head and grab the free printable tank pattern {or any tank top pattern you like}. My tank pattern only needs about 1/4 yard for this project {you are only making the top of the tank} and about 1 yard for the skirt {depending how full you want it}. You will also need clear elastic. Ok… here’s the Girls Sundress Tutorial. Cut out only the TOP part of the tank top. You can have the skirt start as high as 1″ from bottom of arm hole, or as long as 4″. Start by sewing the tank together at the shoulders and sides. {or attach the binding in the flat methods as shown in the original tank post.
Add the neck binding… {measurements on the tank pattern} And the arm bindings. You can leave as is, or top-stitch. I love using my double needle for this. My knit hem tutorial is here.
For the skirt I used this pretty panel- 36 {1 yard} x the desired length of my skirt. Basically you will figure your skirt dimensions like this. You want at least 3x fullness in the skirt. So.. my daughter has a 20″ waist, I want to have at least 60″ of fabric width for the skirt. I used 72″ and my skirt is very full. The height will be from the bottom of where the tank ends to where you want the skirt to finish… Add 1.5″ for hem and seam allowance. Sew skirt panels together and hem. Either turn under 1/4″, then another 1/2″ and sew, or finish with a serger and then turn up 3/4″ and sew. Gather your skirt {need gathering tips, see this post} Do not gather to the same size as the tank, leave around 1.5″ on each side of the tank. Take your clear elastic and cut it the same size as you childs’ chest. {I cut mine 20″} Set aside for now.
With right sides together, pin the skirt to the tank. You will have to stretch your tank to fit. It’s now a dress, but the waist is a bit stretched out. Zig-Zag your clear elastic to the skirt seam allowance inside the dress. You will have to stretch the elastic to fit. Pin in a few places, then stretch and sew.
If you want, you can top-stitch the seam allowance UP towards the tank, or just leave it be. AND Finished!! Yeah!! You did it. Cute right?? I’ve sewn one and have 5 more to go for a photo shoot this summer…

Thank you for this very imformative tutorial. I love the cute sundress. I have one a question though. Never used clear elastic before when I purchase some, should I purchase 1/4″ or 3/8″? Not sure that it matters, but thought I would ask just in case it matters. thank you for your assistance.
