inside: Enjoy this Glasses Case Sewing Tutorial with free pattern. Keep your sunglasses safe and cozy all summer with this glasses case.
**Updated May 2021** This is a free sewing pattern I constantly come back to. I come back to sew myself another glasses case and to keep making it better. I’ve got some new photos and video for the update as well as a tip to make this glasses case sewing tutorial even more protective for your sun glasses. Let’s get ready for summer and sew a fun sunglasses case. I know I need it!
Glasses Case Sewing Tutorial and free pattern
The first case I made was a glasses case like this. I carried it around until it wore out and the button came off, then I came up with this new design. The originals were made years ago, and then I recently updated it to include padding in the flap as well.
Looking for more sunglass cases to sew? Check out this post I wrote with 20+ sunglass case tutorials.
Wow! Look at the improvement in my sewing over the years! The button case is my new one and the others are made form the same free sewing pattern several years ago.
Let’s take a closer look at this padded case and then I’ll walk you through the tutorial. I’ve made a few changes {you can see how much better it is now} and you can also see the video in this post for the case making in action. I love the snap on this case as it keeps my glasses secure and safe. This is good because I am not good at taking care of them.
The video in this post will walk you through all the steps for making this case. You can also scroll down for the photo tutorial. Don’t see the video? Turn off your ad blocker OR try a different browser.
This is a great scrap busting project as well. use up your fabric scraps from other projects. Want more scrap busters? See my huge list here.
How to sew a Sunglasses Case with padding

You will see here a mix of old and new photos… For the most part I sewed the case the same as I always have, but I did add foam to the flap as well as the bottom part. SO, we will make an adjustment to the first step.
CUT TWO of fabric and ONE of foam of the SAME SHAPE. Trim the foam to remove the seam allowance. I like to trim off 1/2″. So ignore the step about cutting a foam square.
With the right side facing up – fold the flat bottom of the fabric up to the bottom of the curved flap. Pin and Sew.
Turn on of these pouches right side out, then place one inside the other – with right sides touching.
Sew the rounded edge together.
Open up the fabric… here is where it gets a little trickier since we are adding the padding to the flap as well. We want to insert the foam between the two layers of fabric. First, slide the foam up inside the curved top. You may need to trim more of the foam to get it to fit.
After you have it in the top, fold the bottom square up over the lining fabric, then pull the outside fabric over the foam.
You should now be able to see the foam inside the fabric. Tuck the lining down inside.
Along the flat open edge of the case you now need to fold the seam allowance in to sew. {you may need to trim the foam again} Fold 1/4″ in and pin or clip. I also placed a few pins through the fabric and foam on a few places around the case to hold everything in place.
Top-stitch to close the opening. Stitch close to the edge and try to stay off the foam. {see the pins I put as placeholders on the other parts of the case?}
Now it’s time to add the closure. I love plastic snaps, but you could also use sew on ones.
I love how it all comes together as a cozy storage space for my sunglasses that also keeps them protected!
Put your sun glasses inside and head outside! Between the two versions here you can see the ones with the foam only on the bottom and the one with the foam also in the top. I love the the all foam version, but you can make either!
I think I like the snap closure a bit more than the sun glasses case from last year – the glasses never fall out!
Here’s the sunglasses case I made last year…

This is a brilliant tutorial and so easy to make. Just whipped two up with hand sewn snaps. Will be making plenty of these in the future. I have made them to pop my glasses in, instead of the hard cases that take up room.
Thank you so very much for the pattern and steps.

I made these for my elderly Aunt. The first was unpaded and I used a snap. However, she had difficulty with the snap, and she leaves them lay on her bedside table and the cat knocks stuff off all the time. The second pair, I just finished and used only partial foam for the top and bottom, but did not fold it up. I also used a magnetic snap for ease in closing them. We shall see how she likes it. I love the pattern, as it has so many possibilities. I used cotton on the outside and light flannel on the inside for added softness.

How do I find the pattern to this sunglass case? Each time I click on the PDF it brings me back a page. Any chance you can email it to me?
Emily says
You are probably clicking the product link and you need to click the download link. There are two files in every email confirmation or account file.
