My kids love imaginative play and toys that feed into their imagination. This is one of the reasons we love PLAYMOBIL toys so much. They inspire my kids imagination to play not only what the theme of the set is, but also beyond. I’ve been making fun felt play mats for years to go with our toys and today I’m going to show you how to make a felt play mat for PLAYMOBIL.

When we saw DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free by PLAYMOBIL at Target I knew my kids {Rose especially} would LOVE these play sets. All my kids {although the boys may not admit it} really have enjoyed the Spirit Riding Free shows and these PLAYMOBIL sets are perfect for even more role play fun.

When the kids came home from school the other day I had the play mat made. The three of them spent the entire afternoon assembling and setting up the PLAYMOBIL toys on the play mat. {more mat details below}
My kids love all the details of PLAYMOBIL and every set we’ve ever had has brought hours and hours of fun into our home. Plus – I love toys that bring the three of them together, which isn’t always easy with age differences and boys and a girl.
Look at all these fun details! It’s like you could walk right into this world and start riding!

How to Make a Felt Play Mat
Begin this fun no-sew craft by gathering your supplies.. You will need:
- Felt of various colors and a large piece {36 x 36} for the backing
- Hot Glue
- Inspiration photos if needed {I looked up a photo of Lucky’s house from the show}
There are LOTS of DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free by PLAYMOBIL at Target so if you play on buying several I would plan out the mat accordingly. We have the sets seen here and I also plan to give Rose the Lucky barn set in a few weeks for her birthday.
They do have a house set, but as of yet I don’t have plans for that so I included a felt house.
You can sketch out your scene {or copy mine!} Before you start cutting the felt. You can see in the post video all the details for making each part. I lay out all the pieces before I do any gluing.
You can use any glue you want to attach the pieces together, but I find that hot glue and felt are a really good match. The glue melts into the felt for a pretty permanent bond.
You probably will be left with some glue strings from the hot glue, so make sure to use a blow dryer to melt these off before you finish the craft.
And there is your gorgeous felt play mat! You can adapt to fit any PLAYMOBIL set you might have or buy. The toys don’t really need the mat, but having a landscape really helps my kids to expand the fun and it keeps all the toys in one place!
You can find DreamWorks Spirit Riding Free by PLAYMOBIL at Target. I went to two stores and found some in the toy isle near all the other Spirit toys and another had them in a special section of new toys… Be sure to look around to find.
