This post is part 1 of 2. First up: How to sew a shirt dress {at least my version}
I LOVE sewing for kids…A friend of ours recently had a little boy… they have two girls already. I wanted to make something for all three of them, maybe something they could use to take cute newborn photos. I love to make matching clothes for kids, so this was a challenge I was up for. Here are the matching outfits I came up with. I’m going to walk you through the onesie and the shirt dress in this post.
The boy onesie was the simple part…
I had a blue onesie, I drew a tie on a piece of paper and cut it out. Then I traced that onto the fabric and cut. Cut one more of iron on interfacing. I ironed the interfacing the tie. Pinned to the onesie and sewed around with a tight zig-zag… simple and cute. Boys can wear pink right?
Okay, now that that simple onesie is done… lets move onto the first dress. I don’t know if this technically is a shirt dress, but I started with a shirt and turned it into a dress, so today we will cover how to make a shirt dress.
I love this type of dress because there is virtually no fitting needed and it comes together quickly. Plus there are tons variations you can make.
I started with a clearance shirt $2.50 {whoot whoot!}
I wanted a high waist so I cut the shirt about three inches below the sleeve. I folded up a 1/2 inch hem {don’t sew yet}
Now, you want to have a total dress length measurement. This will be from shoulder to hem… For example if I wanted my dress to be a finished 32″, I would subtract the length of my top. 32-10=22. So now I need make a 22″ skirt. Add an inch at the top and an inch and half to the bottom for hems and sewing allowance. That would mean I cut my skirt 24 1/2″ long. For the width, mine was about 3x the circumference of the shirt. {not sure the total measurement}
I used my quick gather method and just made quick length adjustments after. I used the edge of the fabric, so I didn’t have to finish the top edge. (you can subtract an inch). Pin the gathered edge to the folded over top of the dress and sew as shown below around the shirt.
Here is the inside view. To finish the edge you can zig-zag or serge around the inside after you sew the two pieces together. Or you can leave it like I did {ha!}…
Hem the dress. Turn over a 1/2 inch and sew, then turn up and sew again… Now you have made a shirt dress! I was thinking of adding pockets on the outside but didn’t have fabric.. I think that would have been cute too. I was thinking something like this photo by Kelly Lea Sews with be cute with this dress. {next time!}
