I’m super excited to share this kids robe sewing tutorial today. The great thing about this tutorial is that you can make it from ANY shirt pattern you already own.. yes, I’ve set it up to be easy and versatile, just like that! This took me only an hour to sew up {including photographing as I went along!}, so it’s a quick easy project with a fun result. I’ve also added a video to this post of me sewing up this tutorial LIVE, so you can turn on the volume and watch the video tutorial as well. This tutorial works great for making a fleece or flannel robe.
Kids Robe Sewing Tutorial
I used the Peek-A-Boo pattern Hangout Hoodie, for the blue one and my boys tee pattern for the pink one – but any shirt pattern will do. Let me show you how.

The tutorial below shows you how to edit the shirt pattern to make a cute robe for either boys or girls… You could use an adult pattern to even make something similar for yourself!!
You will need:
A pattern with a sleeve and front/back that fits your child. {you want to make at least a size larger than normal so it will fit over Pjs}
A hood pattern piece {or a hood to trace}
Fabric {1.5 yrds} + some scraps for trim
Edit the boys free tee pattern {or your pattern of choice} as shown below.
Take a look at my pieces above. I cut them both a full size larger, and the bottom of the sleeves {cuff end} the largest size. If Using the Boys free t-shirt pattern from this site you will want to cut the arms STRAIGHT DOWN – my pink robe the arms are a bit tight.. WIDE ARMS {haha} I didn’t want the cuffs tight. I added a bit of an angle to make the sides a bit roomier too.
Cut the front in two pieces, NOT on the fold I extended the sides of the front to give more fabric to wrap in the front.
If you don’t have a hood pattern piece, use any hood and make a pattern. Hoods do not have to be fitted! {Yeah!} You can also use the hood template linked here.
Measure your child to find out how long you want it to be and extend the pattern that length. Cut the back on the fold and the front with two sides.
Make sure the back of the neck comes up higher than the front.
I just used scraps for the trim, so I cut and pieced it together. I used the star fabric for the hood and waist tie and the blue fleece for the right and left side of the front. I used the same blue fleece for the hood, so it was all coordinating. Cut each 3″ wide and enough length to go up both sides of the front and around the hood.
Now, start sewing. Sew the shoulder seams and attach the arms. Hem the sleeves and sew up the side seams.
Sew up the middle of your hood and attach to your neckline. You could also leave the hood off entirely if wanted.
Now, you will add your trim. I put the stars on the hood and the blue on the sides, so I had to piece it together a bit. You can also just use one long strip. Fold the edging wrong sides together and sew up one side, around the hood and down the other.
Then, fold back the seam and top-stitch to hold it down. You can hem the bottom at this point.
Here’s my finished hood.
Use another piece of the edging, also 3″ wide to make the tie. Sew this one right sides together and turn for the waist tie…. I also made two belt loops to keep it on the robe. Measure where to put these by using your child as a model.
Add your sewing label and that’s it!!! If you have any tips to add to this tutorial please let me know in the comments.
