I picked up this fabric in a “spring clearance” sometime this summer and finally got around to making something with it. This tiered skirt tshirt dress is so super cute and a great combination of two amazing patterns/tutorials. I mashed up the tiered skirt tutorial AND the girls swing top to make this adorable tshirt dress. Check out all the details below.
Tiered Skirt Pattern and tutorial –
Like I mentioned above this is simple a mash up of two great patterns. I’ll be giving you all the mash up details as well as links to the patterns and tutorials I used to create this look. But first let’s take a closer look at this cute tshirt dress with tiered skirt.
Rose plans to wear this dress for the first day of school on Wednesday and I’m just thrilled every time she loves something I make for her.

How to sew a Tiered skirt –
You can find the two patterns/tutorials I used for this project here:
- Tiered skirt tutorial {make in any size}
- Girls swing top {4-14y}
- You can also use any t-shirt pattern as the top
The tiered skirt tutorial shows you how to make a tiered skirt without a pattern. You can create the skirt in any size using the tutorial provided above. I used the same idea when making the dress.. Be sure to reference the original tutorials for the shirt and the skirt when assembling this dress.
I cut out the swing top and shorted the length by several inches. I like to either measure the child or a dress they like to decide the top length. I also cute out the three tiers of the skirt according to the skirt tutorial.
I also added a cute cuff detail on the sleeves. I trimmed a 1/2″ off the sleeves then added my 1.5″ cuff {folded} You can also add the cuff without trimming the sleeve, but I wanted it to stay short and cute.
After you have the top sewn up you can begin to sew the skirt.
How to sew a tiered skirt without a pattern –
Here you can see the completed top, and the three layers of the skirt. Each on is gathered to the width of the one above. I also hemmed the bottom layer before sewing it all together. You also see a pile of clear elastic.
Because my original tiered skirt tutorial was made with woven I was a bit afraid the knit would look stretched out. I sewed clear elastic in between all the tiers of the skirt and also at the waist when attaching the skirt to the top.

So cute right? I just love how it all came together. You can easily adjust how long you want the skirt/dress by adjusting the tiers.
