Travel Portfolio Sewing Tutorial

I’ve got another fun travel post for today. My mom is spending two months in Africa at an orphanage and her birthday was just before she left. I made this travel portfolio for her birthday and her trip. This is the perfect portfolio for one person.{or maybe two}

You need scraps of fabric… equal to 1/2 yard. 1 zipper, one magnetic closure or snap.
cut two rectangles 10 x 6″. Then decide what sort of pockets you want to have.  Cut two of every pocket piece so you can sew them together and turn.
I have a ticket/paper pocket on the right side 6 x ? however tall you want… mine has a slanted top.
On the left side a passport holder… Use a passport to cut the right size.
and a card pocket… again use a card to get the right size.
For the pockets on the left side, finish the card pocket on all sides, the passport one on three sides {the bottom can be left open}. On the right side pocket I finished the top and left side.
Finish the pockets by sewing right sides together, turning and top-stitching.
I wanted this portfolio to have more places to stash stuff…. so I made a zippered pocket on the left side. Prep by sewing the zipper to the left side. And… sewing another 6 x 10″ rectangle and sew and turn the right side panel.
Right side is now down, the left side is top-stitched also. And… the left is ready to go as well with the pockets and zipper all sewed on.
Ok, now… you need a 10x 12″ piece to hold this all together. Pin and sew the zipper. Fold back the pocket, so you have the left and right panel like above.
Now, ONE more 12×10″ will be the outside fabric. Sew around the outside and leave a small gap for turning. If you want to add a closure like mine, sew it into the outside as you are going around at this step.
Turn and top-stitch all the way around. The pin at the bottom is where I turned it…
I added the magnet closure here. You can also use velcro or a snap.
So now you have the three front pockets, a zipper pocket on the left and just a open slot on the right side.
If you could go anywhere in the world and money were no object… WHERE WOULD YOU TRAVEL???

    Hello! I really like this. I was wondering, is it 1/2 fabric total, and then I cut that into the various shapes and things I’ll need? Or is it something different?
