She loves this new Red White and Blue skirt, so today I’m going to share this ruffle skirt tutorial with you. I’m sharing this skirt as part of the Red White and Blue series over at Sugar Bee Crafts – Go check out all the other lovely summer ideas and posts..
Ruffle Skirt Tutorial – red white and blue skirt
A few years ago.. maybe several now, I originally shared this cute skirt tutorial. That skirt was an Easter version.. you can find the post here. Today I’m sharing updated tutorial photos and my fun Red White and Blue ruffle skirt version. Doesn’t Rose look so old in these photos? I cannot believe how big she is getting… Although just when I think she’s growing up here THREE comes out and opens up the crazy {haha}
My talented brother made the flag. You can see his FB page <here>
Here is the cutting chart to make this ruffled skirt. All measurments in Inches. I would suggest cutting the waistband only 3″ for all sizes, but if you want to use widder elastic you can. Use 1″ elastic for all the sizes, unless you want wider for the larger sizes.
Here is my pile of cut fabric for the 3T. I used a fab quater bundle to make my skirt. I’ve had this fabric for was too long and was so excited to make the skirt. Three layers and a waistband + elastic make up the skirt.
I was using fat quarters so I didn;t have the length of the fabric. I had 2 side seams on my skirt peices. So if you don’t have the full 42″, you can piece together to make it work. I sewed the side seams of all layers.
Then hem one side of the layer piece. You can serge, then fold under, or iron under 1/4″ then fold under again and sew.
Here’s what the 2 different hems look like up close.
Sew the waistband together at the short end. Gather the top {un hemed} edge of all layers to the width of the waistband. See how my blue gathers now match the size of the red band piece? Need help with gathering? See this post for lots of options.
Place the three gathered layers in side each other with the right side facing out. Line up the gathered top of each layer, the hems should be different layers.. You can arrange like this.
Fold the waistband over with wrong sides together. Match the side seams/back seam and pin the long edge of the waistband to the top of the skirt. You will have 2 layers of waistband and 3 layers of skirt.
Leave a small opening to thread the elastic.
Close the elastic hole, adjust the ruffles and you are ready to go!! I love this red white and blue ruffle skirt verison.
Rose wore this all day after we took the pictures. I have to make sure to wash it before the 4th. Are you doing any summer sewing?

Hi Emily. Before I try your version of the Ruffle Skirt, could I ask a few questions? Is the waist bulky with five layers sewn together….three being gathered…..especially on a tiny waist….with the waistband also having gathers. Thanks for your patience.
