This post originally appeared on Crafting Con…I participated in Crafting Con a few years ago with a Hunger Games post.. Today I’m channeling Star Wars with this Easy Luke Skywalker Costume. With a few simple modifications to a basic t-shirt pattern you can create a super fun Luke Skywalker tunic.
I’m going to show you how I made the tunic by hacking a pattern I already owned, used Duct Tape to make a light saber, and created nifty boots with masking tape. Let’s start with the light saber and boots. We used black and blue Duct Tape, wrapped over a wrapping paper cardboard tube – simple!
For the boots I used masking tape because it was the color I needed for the boots. Start by putting on leggings {Jack wore white leggings of mine, and just his normal school shoes.
I first wrapping the shoe, then starting at the calf wrap the leg and continue down, then continue down to connect to the shoe tape. Of course, these boots are a one time wear {ha!}
Okay, now let’s make the awesome tunic! As I said before, the leggings are mine, I already had them. If you need to make some, I’ve got a free legging pattern here, goes up to size 12. I used my Free T-Shirt Pattern, and sized up 2 sizes. When you cut the shirt front and back add at least 6″ to the length.
I also altered the sleeves to make them wider and 1″ longer.
With the shirt front folded in half. Cut 1″ over about 7″ down from the top.
When you open the shirt front you have a front that looks like this. For the neck binding, cut a strip 5″ wide and the length needs to be as long as the total neckline length.
Sew the tunic front and back at shoulders. Put in the sleeves, and sew the side seams {if you need help with any of this, refer to the t-shirt tutorial}. Then, fold the neck binding in half, so the wrong sides are together. Pin the right sides of the binding to the right side of the tunic as shown. The ends should be at the bottom of the front V.
Sew, so you now have this…
From the inside of the shirt, fold the neck binding ends over so the cover the end of the V and overlap.
Pin, and sew along this bottom edge.
Fun neckline right? Hem the sleeves and bottom if desired and enjoy your new Luke Skywalker tunic!
So cute right? My son even grew his hair out for the event at school where he wore this easy Luke Skywalker costume. He had a blast and felt great about the costume that we made together. I cut the belt from the pleather I had around. Use what you have to make a belt for the tunic and to hold the light saber. Want to see all the other details from our Star Wars party? The tape boots: genius!
My son wants to be Kylo Ren for Halloween and I had no idea what to do about black boots. This is it! Thank you!

The tape boots idea is genius, perfect for so many costumes. I love the rest too of course but that is just so darn clever!
