Hi everyone! Stacey of Beatnik Kids here today for the ever amazing, Summer Fun Series. Last year I joined in with this silly, Mini-Minion Bowling Game and I’m so excited to be here at Nap-Time Creations this year. With three boys at home, my life if full of dirt, boogers, and lots of superheroes which I try to balance out with massive amounts of sewing. In order to make that indulgence happen, I also facilitate tons of crafts and kid friendly activities to keep my hooligans busy. Today, I’m sharing these fun, kid friendly layered superhero drinks that can be used as a hands-on Science experiment or just a fun snack or party drink.
The layered drink experiment is all about sugar content but if you’re a sugar limiting family, there are plenty of veggie boosting and 100% fruit juice options on the market to make this a little healthier. The juice options show below are by no means those that must be used. Layered drinks are created when each juice has a different sugar content so feel free to pull your favorites from the store shelves and see what works for your family.
We settled on four different Avengers as inspiration for our drinks but the great part of this activity is that you can grab colored juices of any color and create a drink for your child’s superhero. To make a layered drink, fill a clear cup with ice (this helps each drink to filter down slowly). I also recommend putting the juice in the refrigerator for at last 24 hours to ensure it’s nice and cold. Once your cup is full of ice, layer your juices from most sugar content to least. And that’s pretty much all you need to know to start making kid friendly layered drinks.
Here’s how we make each of the four Avenger drinks above:
Hulk- Welch’s Grape Juice and V8 Healthy Green (word of warning here; while the sugar contents were seemingly different enough for this drink, I think the added greens and apple made this juice a bit dense and thus provided a more muddled appearance at the layer. I’d recommend looking for a thinner green juice for a more layered look on this one)
Captain America- V8 Splash Blue Raspberry and Apple and Eve Fruit Punch
Iron Man- Apple and Eve Fruit Punch and Orange Juice
Thor- Apple and Eve Fruit Punch, Orange Juice, and VA Splash Blue Raspberry (These are the cartoon Thor colors)
The boys had so much fun experimenting to see what ratios looked best for each superhero. Since we don’t drink a lot of juice in this house, my boys were equally excited by the idea that mom was letting them try all the different drinks. Hey, some times even a strict mom need to let the kids have some crazy summer fun once in a while. My only recommendation? Get those kids out to the playground or to the backyard for a game of whiffle ball to run off all those sugars!
Thanks Stacey, these drinks look amazing and my boys will be so excited when I try these out! Here are the previous summer fun posts:
