Inside: Several clothing and style tips for family photos. Sewing patterns, fabrics and tips for curating beautitul clothes for family photos.
We are getting ready for family photos this coming weekend. Today I’m sharing some clothing tips for family photos, with a focus on clothes you can sew and fabric choices. I also have some photos from a previous photoshoot a few years ago where I sewed most of the outfits as well. This time I’ve just made the kids clothes, but I have several pattern to share with you that work great for photo basics.
Clothing Tips for Family Photos-
First up, here are some basic tips for family photoshoot clothing..
Neutral colors – using these types of colors make the people in the photo stand out more and less focus is on the clothing. White, cream, tan, or other muted colors… avoid bright colors.
Add some texture! Sweaters, scarves, and a variety of fabrics add great dimension to photos. Everyone in a t-shirt maybe easy, but some added texture will make your final photos more rich and interesting. Chunky sweaters, flowing dresses, and variety of fabric are all ways to mix up the texure.
Coordinate colors, but don’t be super matchy… Lay out all your clothes/fabrics together and see how they go together. Have variety of both colors and patterns. Use an online color palette for help if needed.
Here are the tops we plan to wear for this years family photos. You can see the mix of fabrics, textures and colors. We are having photos taken with a fall mountain background, so I think this palette will work well. I sewed the kids clothes this year and my husband and I are just going to wear sweaters/tops we have in our closet. More info on the kids clothes below.

Use my favorite fabric stores to soursce beautiful fabrics. All the fabric you see in the post here were purchased from my favorite online shops. Here are my Fall Fabric Picks and my Summery Fabric Picks.
