Free sewing patterns for girls – swing top
Since we brought Rose home I’ve been slowly adding to my free sewing patterns for girls collection, but most patterns only go to size 10/12… some aren’t even that big.. I’m try to add some bigger sizes when I can so that I have patterns I can use for many years to come. This is the perfect top to wear with leggings or shorts and I think the fit is just so cute. Rose is wearing the 4T here.
I just love these poses! I do not direct her to do these and some turn out cute and most are terrible, but here are a couple of fun ones that we caught during our shoot.
You can also grab the free sewing pattern for the shorts shown here.

Use this size chart to determine your child’s size for the girl t shirt pattern. You can easily blend width and height. You can also make the shirt into a tunic by extending your shirt a couple of size lengths.
After you download and print the pattern you can assemble it so it looks like this. You will trim the edges and tape together. All seams should be sewn with 3/8″ seam allowance.
You will be able to make this shirt from 1 yard of 60″ wide knit fabric… the smaller sizes will use less than a yard. This shirt is intended to be made with knit fabric {you need at least 2 way stretch and a light fabric works best.} You can buy great lightweight knit fabric HERE. You will cut one front and one back, 2 sleeves, and one neck band. The neckband for this shirt is a binding not a band… but you can easily make it a band. I’ll give you the instructions for the binding here and can direct you to another tutorial for the band. All seams will be sewn with 3/8″ seam allowance.
Begin by sewing the shoulder seams together. If you want to make a band for the neck and NOT the binding as here, check out this shirt tutorial. Cut the band 1.25″ wide and shorter than the binding… Okay… so now back to the binding on this shirt.. Fold the binding in half and press with an iron. Then fold both edges in to the center and press again. You can see the lines on mine below.
Sew the short ends of the binding together with right sides touching. Find the back middle and front middle of the shirt as well as the 2 halves of the binding.
I like to put the back seam of the binding at the back middle of the shirt so the kids can tell the back of the shirt. You can also place this seam on a shoulder seam. Pin binding evenly around on right side of shirt. Match up the edge of the shirt with the edge of the binding.
Stitch around with a stretch stitch {I used a narrow zig-zag} on the first fold line.
On the wrong side of the shirt fold the seam allowance up towards the binding, then fold the other side of the binding in and over the seam allowance. Pin or clip to hold in place.
Top-stitch with a stretch stitch { I used my coverstitch machine}. You can use your regular machine zig-zag stitch or twin needle too.
Match the back of the sleeve with the back of the shirt and the front to the front and then pin in to the center. Sew the sleeve to the shirt. {NOTE – my sleeve is already hemmed because I reused an old shirt to make this one and kept the old hem… I will tell you when to hem the sleeves if you aren’t upcycling}. Sew on both sleeves.
Fold the shirt with right sides together and pin the side seams. Sew.
Hem the sleeves with a 1/2″ hem. You can use a stretch stitch or double needle or coverstitch.
Fold up 3/4″ hem on the bottom of the shirt. You will need to ease the curves. Sew with a stretch stitch or double needle or coverstitch.
and you did it!!! Here’s one more link to go grab the free sewing pattern if you didn’t already.

Hello!
In the chart above the sizes go up to 16 but when I downloaded the pattern, it only goes up to 7. I wanted to do one for my 14 year old niece, how can I do that?
Thank you,
Carla

Do you have a file for this pattern that I could take to print shop and they print it on one large sheet of paper.

I first need to say that I love this pattern and I’m making a second round of them right now. There is just one tiny problem, and that is that on some sizes, the front side seams are a little bit shorter than the back side seams. So BEFORE you cut out, I recommend measuring the side seams on the size you are about to make. I’d already cut out by the time I had realised, but for future attempts, I’m cutting the front of that size a tiny bit longer to match the back side seam. Not a big deal but it will save grief later on if you do measure it before you cut out. The size you want may be fine! My pictures of the first ones I made, and a fuller review, are on my web site. It’s a great pattern, so thank you, Emily.

Really cute pattern. Will be making the size 14 for my granddaughter’s birthday. I was wondering if you could tell me about how much length should be added the the sleeves. The larger sizes don’t looked long quite long enough. Thanks. I have several of your patterns. They are very nice and free is even better.
