inside: See this cozy sweatshirt dress, perfect for winter. Gorgeous gathered sleeves and loose fit, this dress is adorable and comfortable. Sewn using free sewing patterns.
Awhile ago I shared how to add gathered sleeves to a sweatshirt pattern, for a beautiful detail. I decided Rose needed a dress more than she needed another crop sweatshirt, so I cut off the band and added a skirt. I’m going to post the adult version of this with a full tutorial on Friday, but until then here are the general details.
Cozy sweatshirt dress sewing
Remember these adorable gathered sleeve sweatshirts from a few months ago? Rose and I had matching tops… I started over with my dress but like I said above, hers was made from the original top.
The gathered sleeves on this are just the perfect addition. The link above will give you the tutorial to create this look, then I just added a skirt {more details below}
ok! So cute and cozy right? I actually added a brushed waffle skirt because I didn’t’ have more of the sweatshirt fabric I used for the top. I think I’m going to make my version {and another one for Rose if I have fabric} a bit shorter and with pockets!}
Of course it wouldn’t be a kids photoshoot without some outtakes… here are the photos that really make Rose happy…

How to sew a sweatshirt dress
Like I mentioned I will be giving a full photo tutorial on Friday when sharing the version of this I made for me. I wanted to inspire you with these version before that though. Here are the basics for those of you who can just make it.
You will need sweatshirt fabric or french terry for this pattern. I did use a brushed waffle for the skirt, as it’s what I had on hand.
I used my free crop top pattern as the base for the top and then this tutorial for the gathered sleeves. Then I had a cute top, but Rose didn’t need that as mush as she needs comfy school clothes while it’s cold.
I cut off the bottom band {you can pick it out, but I’m a chopper!} then measure the bottom to determine your skirt.
You want your skirt to be at least 1.5x the circumference of the top, which for me would have been 45″. 30″ the circumference + another .5/15″ = 45″. I ended up just using the full width of the 60″ wide fabric though so my skirt is about double the width.
Gather the top of the skirt to match the bottom of the top, then sew the two parts together. Hem the bottom if desired.
Wear your new cozy dress everywhere as it feels amazing!
