My five year old is SUPER into projects… this usually entails him gluing or taping paper, cardboard and anything he can get his hands on together. He is currently stalking the bathrooms in constant watch for empty toilet paper rolls! {ha!} SO… when I asked him to help me create this big Crayola art project, he was thrilled! His younger brother was semi-excited, too. You will see why I say semi-excited soon. And the only thing more fun than making this project was SHOPPING for this project. Walmart is a great place for all things Crayola. You can tell by my photo how popular the Crayola supplies are at Walmart… all cleaned out! We found what we needed though and gathered the supplies for our project.
I had to hold back the eager artists while I took this photo… they were ready to jump right in! We started by dividing the canvas in half {with two boys I have to keep it even!} And I added their names. This was my one and only contribution to the masterpiece. The first layer we started with was crayons. They did a bit of drawing and coloring.Little one didn’t last as long… he was waiting for the next medium.For the second layer we went with paint {this one was the favorite!} Can I just say how much I love this washable paint? It is truly WASHABLE!! {I know, we’ve tested it!} I must say I had a slightly different vision for this project. {like less white space!} but… I held back and really let the boys make it their own. They were super into it, so I just let it go.
Then it was onto layer three. For this layer we added sidewalk chalk dust and glitter to the wet paint. We were going for some dimension to the art.
I wasn’t sure if this would work, but it did, and it was easy, the kids could do it themselves. We took a popsicle stick and scraped it on the top of the chalk. We held it over where you want the dust to go and whaaalaaa! Pretty dust on your picture. It did stick in the wet paint, but you could also use glue.Finally we added some glitter and beads… because what is a kids project without glitter and glue! All this creativeness wore out the younger brother {can you tell?!?}
And here it is one more fabulous time! They are so proud of this big crayola art poster that they made all.by.themselves.
For your viewing pleasure and a laugh if you need one.. here are some out-takes from our photo shoot.What is your favorite Crayola product? So far, I haven’t met one I didn’t like. I love how kid friendly and cleanable they are. Art with kids is incredible messy, and I can be okay with that as long as it cleans up. Knowing that clean up is so easy, I’m more excited about letting these crazy boys explore and express their creativity. You can learn more about Crayola on their Facebook and Pinterest pages.

First of all, your boys are adorable!! Mine are now 17 and 16 but this brings back memories (especially the outtakes – ha). I remember taking them for pictures at Sears and being so upset because I couldn’t get them both to smile at the same time!! Great job mom for letting the boys create this all on their own…I know how hard it is not to step in and create ‘your vision’ for a project. It turned out awesome. They should be so proud 🙂

Thank you! We’ve never tried for professional shots, but I can only guess it would be full of bribery!! :o) We did have a few meltdowns at family photos last summer… I just don’t get it ;o) Thanks for stopping by!
