Inside: Sew a dolman babydoll dress from this free sewing pattern. Tons of sizes from 4-18 years and a super simple sewing pattern and tutorial.
I love sewing comfy summer dresses. I love sewing them, wearing them, and seeing Rose wear them too. Last week I sewed up two new dresses for her using my new crop top pattern {now an adorable dress} and I wanted to show you how I did it so you can create this adorable dolman babydoll dress too! And now I need to figure out how to make this look for me too.
Dolman Babydoll free sewing pattern
This dress takes about 30 min to sew and we are loving the look! Rose wore this one to her last day of school this week and I thought she looked adorable! I made two versions with two different fabrics and two different lengths.
The floral is a double brushed poly I got in a fabric bundle and I used a shorter length for the skirt. The stripes are fa tri-blend t-shirt fabric rom my stash {not sure where I got them} and I used a longer skirt length. I think both versions are adorable and both types of fabric work well.
I wasn’t sure if the brushed poly would be too heavy and pull the top down, but I worked out. I think it also helped that I kept the skirt shorter. You could always add clear elastic in the waistline for stability as well.

How to sew a dress from a free pattern
Alright! Let’s get too it.. Here is what you need to re-create this look using the free crop top pattern.
- Fabric
- I would use lightweight knit like double brushed poly or tri-blend.
- Free crop top pattern size 4-18 {this can actually fit a womens xs!}
- Clear elastic {optional – I didn’t use it}
- Ribbing for neck if you are using tri-blend {this fabric isn’t really great for necklines}
- Sewing machine and/or serger
**All seams should be sewn with a serger or knit stitch. 3/8″ {1 cm} seam allowance included}
Start by cutting out the top. The pattern is very simple and only 6 pages to print. Cut the front and back and neckband. If you want the top slightly longer add one inch. I did this with the floral version.
Now we will cut the skirt using the top. I recommend measuring the top {include front and back} and then cutting skirt top 1.5x that. So if the bottom of the top measures 34″ you would use that plus 1/2 again.. so 34 + 17 = 51″. If you are using 60″ wide you should be fine to cut one piece for the smaller sizes.
For the larger sizes you may need to cut two piece and have side seams. Once you have your width, then decide the length and cut.
Sew the front and back together at one shoulder seam, then stretch and sew the neckline to the opening.
Sew the other shoulder to close the neckline.
Hem the ends of the dolman sleeves.
Sew the side seams.
Sew either the back seam of the skirt {if using one panel} or the side seams {if you cut two panels}
Hem the skirt. With this style I will often to this before sewing it on the dress.
Run two gathering lines across the top of the skirt. Need help with gathering? Here are my how to gather tips.
Pull the gathering strings until the skirt matches the top size.
With right sides together pin or clip the skirt and top together. Sew with a serger or knit stitch.
You did it!! So cute right? And so simple… Now go make five more {haha}
And that’s a wrap! Another adorable and super simple dress option you can sew up for summer!!

I would love your directions to be printable so if I am not near my computer I can still follow the steps. I love your patterns and enjoy making them for my granddaughter!!

This dress is so cute. I might download it, and scale the pattern for the bodice up and use it for a bodice for me and then attach a circle skirt and put a keyhole with button detail on the back. Thanks! BTW, Rose is becoming such an adorable little lady!
