My {cheap} sun glasses have been floating around the bottom of my purse getting scratched up for the past few years. I just haven’t taken the time to make a glasses case, but this week I changed that! My tutorial for the week is this easy sew sun glasses case, and it will keep my $10 sun glasses safe and sound! {ha!} Maybe if my sun glasses stay in one piece for longer than I few months I’ll actually be willing to spend a bit more on my next pair {although I doubt it…ha!}
Easy Sew Sun glasses case-
I made up two versions. One with just an open top for quick access and another with a button tab to keep your glasses extra safe.
You can also check out this printable sun glasses case pattern. It’s a bit different if you are looking for another option.
If you are looking for even more options, check out this post with 20+ sunglass case tutorials in it.
I used plastic needlepoint canvas {Amazon aff. link} as the stabilizer. I wanted to protect not only from scratches, but also getting broken by all the “stuff” I throw in my bag. You want your canvas to be a bit wider than your glasses- at least 1/2″ on each side.
AND when you fold over like this, you want the glasses completely enclosed and not too tight. So first, cut the canvas.
Then, cut TWO pieces of fabric 3/8″ larger on all sides than your canvas. This is the seam allowance for when you sew.
Sew around three sides of your fabric, with the right sides of the fabric together.
Turn right side out and insert the canvas.
Fold the open side in towards the canvas and pin along the whole side.
Sew this side shut. Because the canvas is inside you will need to be careful when you sew. Try to slide the canvas out of the way and go slowly. It was bulky in my machine, but worked fine.
You now have two options to close the case. Sew with a machine, or hand sew two sides. I did one of each. For for hand sewing, I used 3 strands of embroidery floss.
Fold the case over and start with the short side, sew the bottom, then up the side.
Here’s the hand sewing version.
Another variation that I tried on my second is a button closure. Pin a piece of ribbon in half {long enough to go around your button. You will want to pin it in the middle of the right half of the top. So when folded over it’s in the middle of the case.
Sandwich the ribbon between the two layers of fabric. When you sew, catch the ribbon in your stitching.
I used the machine to sew up the bottom and side of this version. Again, trying to keep the canvas out of the way while I sewed the very edge of the fabric. Sew a button on.
An added layer of sun glass protection!
There you go! Two options of easy sewing sun glasses cases! I think I may make something similar for a phone case too! Happy spring!
