inside: Check out this fun family photo idea, using color powder! Our cousin photo shoot this year was a blast {and a bit messy} See this fun shoot plus many others for fun family photo ideas.
I used to sew clothes for all the cousins… then the kids got big and old and sewing for them was harder and less fun. The last couple years we’ve just done something a little crafty and then taken fun family/cousin photos. I think it’s worked out well and this year we too super fun color photos with all the kids!
Cousin Photo shoot ideas-
I’m always trying to think of something new and creative to organize for the kids. It used to revolve around something I was sewing, but this crowd is just too much these days! With 13 kids and 4 of the them in the teenage years sewing for them all isn’t practical or really even worth it any more.
Ready to see some photos? I took a million, so I’ll try to limit… if you are interested in the supplies used for this, scroll down below the photos and I’ll leave all the details!
Let’s start with a fun before and after! We did have one kids decide she didn’t want anything to do with this adventure.. She made it into the before photo, but that is the last you will see of that little one in this post. {can you tell who it was?}
We had the older kids go first to show the little kids how it was done. After this one we also instructed the kids to aim lower {not at the face!}
We gave the kids the option of sunglasses if they wanted.. we had a mix of those who did and those who didn’t. Overall 12 kids walked through the line of cousins and got fun colors on their shirts… I’ll give more details about the cousin shirts below in the details.
Because I wanted a lot of fun photos from this event I took photos of each kid as they walked through… I probably took about 5 of each kid. I’m only show just a fraction of the photos here, but I’ll try to give you some idea of the variety of shots.
If you can encourage the kids to walk with their head held high the photos turn out great. We had a few more shy/timid ones and it shows.
Even our little ones had fun.. Dad on one side and mom on the other, they had a blast.
Unique family photo ideas-
Ok! Let’s gather supplies…. I used all scrap vinyl from my stash {this is why each shirt has different vinyl}. I will list where I bought my items, but you can get each where ever you want..
- White t-shirts. We bought ours at Hobby Lobby since they are always on sale {priced between $2.50-4}
- Heat Transfer vinyl {if adding text to the shirts}
- I used my ScanNCut to cut the vinyl
- Color Powder {non-toxic} from Amazon
- This pack was more than enough for the 12 kids. I would buy a slightly smaller pack if ordering again. But I have enough left for another small shoot.
- tiny cups
A few weeks before our family reunion time my mom came to visit and we bought all the shirts and she helped me weed the vinyl after it was cut. I ironed the vinyl onto the shirts and that was all the prep I had to do.
When I got to my parents I spent some time preparing the color in the small cups. Decide how many cups you need.. We had 12 kids and each was going to throw and each other cousin.. so 12 x 12 is 144 cups.
Find a place outside to take photos {grass is best} and give the box of cups to an adult for safe keeping.
Set up two lines of kids and have them take turns walking through. Toss the color as the kid passes in front of you. Try to not through at faces. {the color should wash out of the shorts} After each turn, we had the kids grab another cup of color. Try to give a variety of colors for each turn.
Here’s our kids after they were colored. Try not to brush the color off until you have taken all the photos you want. It gets mucky and less vibrant if you brush at it.
A final fun photo is to give each kid a final cup and then toss it in the air. Again, the more they keep looking at the camera the better the photos.
