I’m so excited to share this little messenger bag free pattern today. This is version 2.0 for this project. A few years ago I shared two bags that I made for my boys. You can check out those bags here. My boys are still using those bags… ALL THE TIME! They look well loved by this point and Rose was always dragging those bags around, so I decided it was time she had her own. I made this bag a little bit smaller than the previous version, and I’ll share the measurements below. This size bag is perfect for this 3-year-old cutie.. but if you have a bigger child I would make the size give in the original post here.
This small messenger style bag has a front pocket and is the perfect size for small boys and girls to carry around their toys and treasures. You can adjust the strap for height. If it’s too long, you can always tie a knot until your little ones grows.
To make.. I would suggest using one fabric that is a bit more stiff {canvas, wool, laminated, PUL, etc…} the lining can be thinner. You want the bag sides to stand up though, so you will need an outer fabric with substance. I used a laminated fabric here… Of the MAIN fabric cut 2 main sides {9×9″}, 1 end {2×27″} and 1 pocket {6.5×6.5″}. Of the LINING fabric cut 2 main sides {9×9″} and one end {2×27″}. You will also need a 2″ strap. You can use strapping {as I did} or make one. The length is determined by the height of your child.
Asking her to hold the bag up is confusing.. and hard to photograph! HA!
You can find the photo tutorial for putting the messenger bag free pattern together over at the original post OR in the video below.

Just made a boys bag with slots for cars in the front. Haven’t yet decided on straps. Great project.
