Do you sew your own clothes for family photo shoots? I’m love matching/coordinating outfits and when kids cross so many size ranges, it’s often easier to make then to buy! You can see last years photo shoot here. This year my mom mentioned that she had purchased matching shirts for all the grandkids when she was in Thailand and I could just make the bottoms if I wanted. I decided this sounded like less work for me, so I bought fabric that I thought coordinated {working off a photo of the shirt} and the end result is just adorable. SO… here’s the cousin photo of the year and I’ll share the pattern and fabric details below.
Sew Your Own Clothes for Family Photos –
Let’s quick talk about some of the details of patterns and fabric, then you can scroll down to see all the photos and previous years photo shoots as well. The patterns/tutorials used for the bottoms were my leggings with circle skirt attached and kids mesh shorts. I used cotton lycra for all the girls under shorts {all in brown} and then a combination of brown and maroon athletic mesh for the shorts and circle skirts. I’ve linked each color to the source I used to purchase. {the brown is sold out}
So first up for a closer look is the girls skirts. I followed the tutorial for the leggings with skirt attached, but used the summer shorties instead of the full leggings. I asked my sister and sister-in-law for measurements of the low waist and from that place to where the skirt should fall… from these measurements I cut and sewed up these adorable circle skirts with leggings… {don’t want to do any math? use my summer play skirt pattern for full pattern pieces!} They all fit great, so I was excited.
Before we talk about the shorts, lets talk about these boys taking a “tough guy” photo.. they have tried {and failed} for the last couple summer so enjoy the outtakes! {haha!}
The shorts used free mesh shorts pattern with a slight variation on each. On the left was a red cuff {no hem} the center has scoop cutouts for side panels, and the right side has the red stripe down the side. Each is just a variation using color blocking.
We took these photos on a gorgeous evening just after a storm blew through… The kids here range from 12 – 1 years old and were pretty cooperative…
We also tried to have some fun along the way. So fun spending a week with cousins and family! Happy summer! You’ll find the links to the previous years posts at the bottom.

These first years the outfits are a little hard to look at… my sewing skills were pretty raw {ha!}
